While living and teaching in Washington, D.C., I've learned a lot about myself. One of the things students have taught me is that I often sound more Southern than I realize. As a discussion leader, I often find myself using the phrase "okay y'all," and this small colloquial phrase, when used in the classroom, accomplishes a lot. This phrase has become shorthand for me in the classroom, to invite students to listen up, gather together, lean in, figure out, or think through.

I hope this site will accomplish many of those same goals. I primarily teach writing, and I also practice writing of my own. I'm interested in reading, literacy studies, the scholarship of teaching and learning, Civil Rights history, and athletics. These topics will frequently appear in conversations, and I invite all who are interested to join the conversation. Using the blog on this site, I invite others to not only read about what I'm doing, but also to participate through the "comment" and "contact" functions. Okay y'all...
